Reflections on "Transsexualism and Sex Reassignment" 1969 -1999 Treatment/Management and Funding Issues at the Gender Identity Clinic, Charing Cross Hospital Eyre, Jane, Clinic Manager, Gender Identity Clinic, Charing Cross Hospital, London The Gender Identity Clinic at Charing Cross Hospital was founded in the early 1960s. Based on the number of patients attending the clinic alone, it can be considered among the largest gender identity clinics in the world. Empirically, the referral rate to the clinic has steady increased over recent years, while the number of patients who fail to attend their appointments shows a decline. In this presentation we examine how referral procedures to the clinic in the UK are arranged within the National Health Service (NHS). We also report on the current treatment and management of patients attending the clinic and the possible effects new funding regulations within the NHS service may have on the clinics management. Finally we discuss what the future holds for the clinic and the patients it serves. |
