Out on a Limb: The Professional Dilemmas in Approving Autogynephiles for GRS

Since psychologist Ray Blanchard’s first delineation and naming of the autogynephile phenomenon as a subgroup of M to Fs with gender dysphoria over a decade ago, many clinicians have identified patients with these characteristics in their own practices. These individuals often seek support for complete hormonal and surgical reassignment. Some clinicians see autogynephilia as a critical diagnostic question, while others consider it irrelevant. Does this diagnosis or label indicate positive or negative outcome for GRS? Through review of the literature and illustrative case presentations from the Vancouver Clinic, the spectrum of current approaches will be discussed. Participants are invited to bring their own difficult cases for discussion.
