Transsexuality and the Current Law

PICARD, TREY U.S.A.
Co-authors: Lee E. Emory & Collier Cole (U.S.A.)

Increasingly transgendered individuals are coming before the courts to seek assistance with, and interpretation of, their legal rights as citizens. Such has occurred in recent years as the result of select individuals, attorneys, groups, and even the media drawing attention to perceived instances of inequality and discrimination. A body of law is now developing in this regard to address key issues, including work, family, relationships, and reimbursement for medical expenses. This presentation offers a review of pertinent case histories, legal interpretations, and appellate decisions regarding the rights of transsexuals. The data is compiled from experiences primarily in the United States and the United Kingdom and will review current legal thinking that has consequences for those in the transgender community.
