Human Papillomavirus Infection: A Potential Menace in the Transsexual Community and the Importance of Gynecologic Evaluation for the Postoperative Male to Female Transsexual

KIRK, SHEILA U.S.A.
E-mail: sheilakirk@aol.com

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is distinctly an etiologic agent in the development of dysplastic cellular change, pre-invasive and invasive cancerous changes in the cervix and the vagina in genetic women. The virus is also causative in the development of ano rectal cancer in both the gay and non-gay population. The male to female postoperative population, in significant numbers, can be infected with this virus and consequently be victims in the malignant process that can follow. Four cases of vaginal cancer in the neo-vagina of male to female transsexuals are known to the author. New women should have the gynecologic care of their genitalia as is available to genetic women and be so advised by their doctors.
