The prevention and treatment of breast cancer among female-to-male transsexual and transgendered persons is rarely discussed in the medical literature or in clinical care. A reduction in the relative risk of breast cancer following female reduction mammoplasty has been reported (Brown et al 1999; Baasch et al 1996) but individuals who have experienced female pubertal breast development remain at risk for breast cancer unless all breast tissue is removed. FTM individuals ordinarily retain a cosmetic quantity of female breast tissue, but are rarely included in breast cancer screening/early detection programs. In this paper, the authors present several clinical cases of breast cancer among FTM persons. The experience of the FTM community in the U.K., with regard to breast cancer information and screening, is discussed. Preliminary recommendations for breast care among FTM persons are offered.
