The authors describe their experience with regard to 29 cases of
phalloplasty performed since 1997 at the "Servizio de Adeguamento tra
Identita Fisica e Identita Psichica (SAIFIP)", of San Camillo
Hospital, Rome. The paper illustrates the techniques used and the timing
according to the following scheme:
|
1st step |
preparatory |
abdominal skin expanders insertion to
widen and autonomise the flaps |
|
2nd step |
40-60 days later |
hysterosalpingo-oophorectomy,
following Pryor phalloplasty with suprapubic flap, urethroplasty
with inguinal flap (pars mobilis) and supraclitoral flap (pars fixa) |
|
3rd step |
3 months later |
neo-urethra and original meatus
anastomosis |
|
4th step |
3 months later |
scrotoplasty and prosthesis insertion
to obtain neophallus rigidity. |
Comparative considerations between this method and the one that employs
antebrachial free flap, performed by the authors in 32 cases since 1992,
are made.
