The Effectiveness of Group Psychotherapy on People with Gender Identity Disorder in a Public Hospital

The presentation starts with a brief examination of the literature on the theoretical as well as practical effectiveness of group psychotherapy, particularly on the experience of transsexual people in public structures. Additionally, there will be a description of the principles and modalities conducted, with which, between 1998 and 2001, the group experiences in self-help, counseling and psychotherapy at SAIFIP (Health Care Centre for Gender Identity Disorders) in San Camillo Hospital in Rome. The paper will then terminate by drawing some conclusions on the objectives (both the participants’ and the service workers’) as well as on the group impression on the last year of work.
