Chapter 3: Follow-up studies in chronological order Wålinder, 1967 This monograph contains a detailed literature review and analyzes 207 cases of transsexualism described in professional literature. Further, 43 of his own patients who were studied for the first time between April 1963 and December 1965 are described in detail. The section about treatment and results is very short, being contained on less than one printed page (pp. 71). Because of this reason, this publication is not presented here in more detail. Treatment course and results of the sample are the theme of a later follow-up study (comp. Wålinder & Thuwe, 1975; Lundström, 1981). It is reported that all 30 MTFs received supportive psychotherapy. Fifteen received estrogens and five of them also a conversion operation. Eight had achieved a name change, four of whom had hormone treatments and surgery and four only hormone treatments. Of the 13 FMTs, one received, besides supportive psychotherapy, only hormone treatment. Another eight received hormone treatments and surgical breast reductions. A name change was achieved by nine of those treated with hormones, among them seven who had surgery. Regarding results it says that, except for three cases, the surgery and name change was too recent to say anything definite about the results. Regarding the surgery or name change, the mean follow-up study time was 1.7 years for females and 3.5 years for males. All patients said that the procedures made it easier for them to find their way, that they stabilized mentally and that their sexual lives were better. No patient regretted the measures taken. Disadvantageous results of the treatment were not seen. Overall, the males seemed to gain more than the females by treatment. |
